1st Garbage & Recycling
Collection Center

It all started at a meeting prior to June 2008. We already had a very successful fund raiser the previous fall, and were looking for a useful way to use the money raised, for something to aid our community. Several ideas came out at that meeting, however we thought the most pressing problem was, garbage & trash litter, which made air unhealthy to breath, and was unsightly. Animals were overturning barrels, and garbage was being strewn all over.

This was a garbage committee issue, and it was recommended that they research, and come up with some ideas. We met, and came up with several solutions, which were submitted for review, at our next meeting on 06-23-08. We recommended 100 more trash barrels, and to establish 10 dump sites through out the city. We discussed how we could accomplish these lofty goals, and get our Delegado - Rodriego Pena involved. The executive committee met, and approved the plan with two changes. We would change the name from dump site to collection center, and add an area at the site for recycling.

We picked the 1st site to be located at the corner of Universidad & Las Minitas. We would use Ronīs RV as a sample of the type of building we wanted. That type of building keeps the animals out, and the smell down. We came up with a budget not to exceed $12 M pesos. We thought we could get the labor donated by a local contractor, and try to get as many things as we could donated. Ron asked if we could beautify the area by adding grass, and a nice bench for people to sit and rest.
The next step was to meet with the Delegado and get his approval of the location, and type of construction. The Delegado was worried about the construction, and asked if we could move it, if needed. We told him we could, and he gave the project his complete blessing.

We just needed to wait for Cuco Castaleon to start. Then the rains started, and we had drainage problems that had to be corrected. We had to wait, because it was too wet to work in there. Once the rains had subsided, David Graff and I cleaned the site readying it for the final grading which was accomplished with Ron Deschamp at the controls of the grader. Raul Orozco had donated his machine, and some gravel at 50% off. Hugo put the grass in that he donated, Manuel put in posts & fence to keep the animals & cars out. Cuco put a slab down, and brought bricks in. Another crew was organized to split the posts, clean up some more, and re-fence the private property. The people that helped that day, were: Tony- a good neighbor, Bill & Mary Dickson, Pat Murphy, Ron & Manon and Dianna Rohde.

The building was completed by Cuco & his crew. Manuel painted the trim. Gary Harr donated a half log from his property for the bench, and Pat Murphy shaped the slab and found two palm stumps for the legs. He called me, and we put it together & installed it. The final thing to do was to fabricate the signs & install them.
We plan on having a proper dedication, with the many people responsible for this community improvement, in attendance. Amigos De Lo De Marcos can be proud of this accomplishment. Hopefully we can do more.
