APCC Report
November, 2011

72 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens were successfully surgically sterilized at the Nov. 2-5 PEACE clinic here, thanks once again to Amigos de Lo de Marcos for sponsoring it! The total number of animals sterilized for the year is now 231! Thanks also to Domingo Castillo for donating the clinic site on Ave. del Bosque which was the former pre-school. Domingo is the son of the owner of the restaurant which was formerly Sugar and Spice, across from the little church on the plaza. Thanks to the generous donation of costly surgical supplies by DVM Malcolm Macartney of Victoria, Canada, PEACE reduced their $17,000p fee to $10,000p – a big savings for Amigos! Dr. Macartney also made it possible to purchase other needed medicines and supplies for the clinic. Please read more about this great humanitarian and his MexCan animal project on the Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue website. Two special volunteers, Ruth and Bill Wilshire from Canada, flew down with the donated surgical supplies and volunteered every day at the clinic! Lonnie and Stacey Ford of Villas del Rey kindly provided housing for them and also for Anthony & Jimena, two PEACE vets. Stacey also worked tirelessly alongside Lee Caflisch in recovery each day and both women also donated food, helped with clean-up each day and pack-up on the last day. El Caracol once again provided housing for the other 4 PEACE team members, this time a spacious 2 bedroom with kitchen and living room suite! Manuel also donated a fridge for use during the clinic. PLEASE READ ON for more news and for recognition of more volunteers and donors who helped make the clinic a success!

In addition to the sterilizations, another 6 animals needed consultations and medications, and some required haircuts and baths for health reasons! Two dogs’ eyes were actually stuck shut due to overgrown hair and eye infections, and it took a team of volunteers 2-3 hours each to carefully cut off all the hair mats and then properly bathe them! Grooming is a new addition to the clinics when enough volunteers are available, because many animals in town will never get it otherwise and desperately need it!

The cat traps that Amigos purchased went to good use and at least 8 wild cats were captured by 4 different people and brought in for fixing.

A new PEACE team member, Emily L’Hoist, a Mexican who also speaks fluent English and French, went to all the schools here to do humane education programs and then held after school interactive classes at the clinic site.

Jesse Lewis worked all through the clinic and the week before also, fixing elec. and plumbing, hauling supplies, cleaning cages, power washing the patio, setting up, cleaning the bathroom and keeping water supplied for sanitation throughout the week, and running errands.

Kathleen Cook and Victoria helped clean and disinfect floors, bathroom and kitchen before the clinic. Victoria’s son wants to a vet one day and he helped assemble crates when the PEACE team arrived and also volunteered each day after school.

14 MORE LDM animals were sterilized at the Nov. JBAR PEACE clinic in  La Penita Nov. 16-19th. Marge Hummel, Maureen Fatins and Ann Embury-Lewis transported animals and volunteered each day. Maureen and Marge also brought to LDM from Canada flea and tick meds, collars, leashes and other supplies.

During the summer and early fall, 19 LDM animals were taken to clinics in Sayulita and San Pancho for sterilization.

In other VERY important APCC news, Bonnie Killip of LDM just brought down a large amount of costly vet surgical and medical supplies donated by her vet in Victoria, Canada, DVM John Gafer of the Juan de Fuca Vet Clinic. Karen Clark, his assistant, organized the supplies. These supplies will be used when necessary for emergency surgeries and during the next PEACE clinic, insuring Amigos de LDM another discount!

WARNINGS: There has recently been an extensive outbreak of canine distemper/moquillo, deadly and extremely contagious. It starts with a severe respiratory infection and mucous pours out of the nose and eyes. If a dog does survive it is usually left with severe neurological damage. Please make sure your dogs have their boosters, which are available through any vet!

Also, be EXTREMELY vigilant about keeping ticks off your animal! Ticks carry the deadly Erhlichia microorganism which destroys the red blood cells. An animal may show no symptoms until it is too late! Vets acknowledge that ALL ticks are likely carriers. A blood test is recommended for all animals who spend time here.

THANKS AGAIN ONE AND ALL!
