Review of Sterilization Clinic – March 30 – April 2nd, 2011
Gillermena graciously hosted the 4 day Clinic which proved to be very successful with 93 animals being sterilized and an additional 15 LDM animals were transported and accommodated at the La Penita Clinic bring the total to 108. A total of 39 volunteers contributed a total of over 615 hours. This included a considerable number of experienced volunteers from La Penita.
Total number of 7 animals were placed – 3 to Canada & USA – 1 dog and 3 kittens locally.
We currently have 3 local dogs undergoing chemotherapy for Canine Contagious Venereal Cancer, in La Penita. This has been paid for by JBAR and transportation provided by Ana.
1 male dog was euthanized due to untreatable, advanced CCVC.
There is a flea and tick infestation in the community to the extent that people are approaching Ana asking for assistance in dealing with this.
Supplies:
Thanks to JBAR and especially to Malcolm McCartney of the McKenzie Veterinary Clinic in Victoria, for contributing and supplying much needed anaesthesia drugs, IV catheters and sutures....the most expensive supplies for the clinic. This reduced the cost of our clinic (Payable to PEACE) from $16,000 pesos to $10,300 pesos.
Volunteers:
Special thanks to Jennifer Bernard for coordinating the lunches for the Vets and volunteers and evening meals for the vets. Accommodation provided by El Caracol and Marge & Hummel at Brisa Suave.
Kudos to Maureen Fatin for developing a volunteer program and she will be sending out a thank you to all the volunteers concerned as part of National Volunteer Recognition Week.
An orientation for new volunteers will be held following the set up date for our next Clinic (November).
Education - re health & care of animals.
Barbecue hosted by Rob & Jenny. Anthony (Vet) did an educational presentation followed by a Q. & A. To six students who attend the Casa de Los Ninos.
On Saturday, 3 of those students volunteered 12 hours in Recovery. They were trained and supervised by Karen. These students have shown a keen interest in this field.
Two groups from the Secondary school and their teachers visited the clinic and were given the opportunity to see surgery and the recovery process.
Lupita, who works at the Casa de Los Ninos, intends to continue working with the children there to educate them on the care of their animals.
For the November Clinic, Lupita will organize a tour for groups of the Casa children who might be interested in attending the clinic. Any students who have a special interest will be encouraged to attend the Saturday Clinic to participate as volunteers.
La Penita Clinic - April 5 -9th, 2011
A number of dedicated volunteers also assisted at the La Penita Clinic. 15 animals from LDM were taken to this clinic. A total of 244 animals were sterilized over a 4 day period.
Dr. McCartney also generously contributed the same supplies to this clinic. In addition he did several special consults and operated on two LDM dogs.
November Clinic:
Date to be determined. Meanwhile a list of needed supplies will be developed and circulated to possible donors and volunteers.
Next Committee Meeting:
The committee will re-convene in November 2011.
Financial Assistance Request:
1. Reimbursement in the amount of $2,312 pesos to cover the cost of essential supplies for the recent clinic. These supplies included items such as flea & tick medications, posters to advertise the clinic, laundry and cleaning supplies etc. This refunded $2,312 pesos together with donations received will be used to support the work of the ACPC over the coming six months. This will include such items as Veterinary visits for euthanasia injections, broken limbs, cancer treatments etc.
2. Additional funds to purchase two (2) small animal live traps, to try to deal with the problem of an infestation of feral cats in the community. The cost would be approximately $1,000 pesos each. Requests for animal traps outweighs the number available.
The $16,000 approved minus $10, 300 equals a saving of $5,700.
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Hummel,Chair, ACPC
